✨ Grok Imagine
xAI's fast image/video generator. For a window in late 2025 it was the internet's go-to for uncensored generation. Through 2026 that changed: Grok Imagine now ranks among the most moderated mainstream tools. This page explains what happened and what Grok is still useful for.

What changed (timeline)
- Late 2025: Grok Imagine launches free, fast, and less filtered than DALL·E or Midjourney.
- Jan 9, 2026: after viral non-consensual deepfakes of public figures, xAI restricts image generation to paying subscribers.
- Jan–Mar 2026: xAI adds a two-layer safety system: a prompt guard plus a post-generation classifier. It removes the NSFW preference toggle; extended NSFW videos start disappearing.
- Mar 19, 2026: xAI removes the free tier.
- Mar 2026: a Dutch court injunction over non-consensual imagery further hardens policy.
- 2026 onward: "predictive" moderation evaluates the likely output, not only the prompt, so even clean prompts get blocked when the result might look like real footage.
How the moderation works now
Understanding this explains why "clever prompts" don't help:
- Output-prediction scoring: the system predicts how realistic and risky the video could become before rendering and blocks accordingly.
- Highest sensitivity on realistic human faces, public figures, and anything that reads as "real footage."
- Two layers, every generation: keyword/context prompt guard + post-generation image classifier.
- No bypass toggle, no tier exemption. All users operate under the same guardrails; attempts to bypass risk account restrictions.
Enforcement has also been inconsistent. Users report fully SFW prompts (bikinis, anime, even clothed edits) getting "Content moderated." xAI acknowledged some image-edit blocks as bugs. The rules shift constantly, sometimes day to day, and none of it is in our control. Treat Grok as unreliable for any borderline content.
The one narrow exception (and why it's not worth banking on)
xAI applies slightly looser ("R-rated") rules to edits and image-to-video built from a Grok-generated input image, on the theory that the source already cleared their pipeline. In practice this is finicky and unreliable enough that we don't recommend planning a workflow around it.
- The input image has to be byte-for-byte what Grok produced. Any transformation, reformatting, cropping, scaling, re-encoding, or EXIF change makes xAI fail to recognize it as their own output and fall back to stricter (PG-13) moderation. This is easy to trigger without realizing it; many tools silently re-save or re-encode images (e.g. a PNG extension on JPEG-encoded data).
- "R-rated" is roughly: no visible genitalia and nothing explicitly sexual (even simulated sex, clothed, can get moderated). Full nudity has been observed to pass only when sufficiently zoomed out, obscured, or covered, and even that is inconsistent.
- Moderation runs pre- and post-processing on both images and video. Because video processing is expensive, the heaviest screening lands on input images.
The findings above come from extensive internal testing and the rules keep moving, so treat them as directional, not guarantees. The honest takeaway: don't build a pipeline on this. Spend your energy on what the Wan 2.7 Uncensored and Seedance 2.0 routes can do instead of what Grok won't.
The silver lining if you still prefer Grok
If you specifically like Grok's look and want to keep using it through Venice, two things still set this route apart:
- Privacy: Venice runs Grok as a zero-data-retention (ZDR) route, so your prompts and outputs aren't retained.
- Most lenient access available: of the third-party providers, Venice operates under the most permissive moderation rules xAI grants. It's still moderated, but it's the least restrictive way to reach the model.
What's not coming back: the pre-clampdown Grok Imagine 1.5 combination of fast, cheap, high-quality, and uncensored. That mix isn't available anywhere right now and won't be until a strong open model can be integrated privately. Set expectations accordingly.
What Grok is still good for
For cinematic quality go to Kling 3; for control and mature content go to Seedance 2.0 or Wan 2.7.
Prompting (when it works)
Grok responds to the same director formula as everything else. Keep subjects unambiguous and avoid anything that could read as a real person to dodge false blocks.
