➡️ Leaving Grok Imagine
Grok Imagine's uncensored era is over. If your workflow depended on it, this plan moves you to models that give more capability, more control, and stay permissive when used right.
What happened, briefly
Through 2026, xAI layered on stricter moderation after high-profile non-consensual deepfake incidents and legal pressure (including a Dutch court injunction). The result: a removed NSFW toggle, paid-only access, disappearing extended NSFW videos, and "predictive" moderation that blocks the likely output before it renders. The rules also keep shifting, sometimes day to day, and they're entirely outside any provider's control. No toggle or prompt trick restores the old behavior. Full timeline on the Grok Imagine page.
The thing people actually miss is pre-clampdown Grok Imagine 1.5: fast, cheap, high-quality, uncensored, and private, all at once. That specific combination isn't coming back, here or anywhere, until a strong open model can be integrated privately. The good news is each piece is available somewhere now, so pick the priority that matters most and migrate toward it.
You don't have to leave entirely. Venice still runs Grok as a zero-data-retention (ZDR) route, and of the third-party providers operates under the most lenient moderation xAI grants. It's still moderated, but it's the most private and permissive way to reach the model. See the Grok Imagine page for the narrow cases that still work.
Where to go: pick your priority
If you want control + consent-based mature content → Seedance 2.0
The recommended default. Seedance does more than Grok did: a 12-file reference system, native audio, 2K, motion transfer, and real-face references with active consent and identity verification. Suggestive content lives in its permissive gray zone; third-party API access opens up more than the consumer app.
- Start with: I2V from a strong reference image; direct motion + lighting in the prompt.
- Read: Seedance 2.0 + NSFW best practices.
If you want genuine no-filter freedom → Wan 2.7 Uncensored
Open weights mean no platform deciding what you can make. Two routes:
- Wan 2.7 Uncensored on Venice: a filter-free hosted build, tuned for anatomy and intimate motion, with no GPU or setup.
- Self-host Wan in ComfyUI with NSFW LoRAs. Fully private, nothing uploaded (needs an RTX 4090-class GPU).
If you miss fast, good-looking clips → Happy Horse 1.0
For everyday SFW generation (and talking characters), the #1-ranked Happy Horse replaces Grok with faster, higher-quality output. Not the pick for explicit work.
Feature mapping: Grok → alternatives
| What you used Grok for | Move to |
|---|---|
| Uncensored I2V from your own art | Wan 2.7 Uncensored or Seedance (suggestive) |
| Quick uncensored T2V | Wan 2.7 Uncensored |
| Animating a consenting partner's photo | Seedance 2.0 (consent + ID) or Wan self-host |
| Fast SFW social clips | Happy Horse 1.0 / Kling 3 |
| Cinematic quality | Kling 3 |
A mindset shift that pays off
Grok rewarded one-line prompts and luck. The models you're moving to reward direction: a good reference image, defined camera and motion, and controlled lighting. You'll spend a bit more setup time and get more consistent, higher-quality results. Start with Generation Modes and Prompting Fundamentals.
