xAI's fast image/video generator. For a window in late 2025 it was the internet's go-to for uncensored generation. Through 2026 that changed: Grok Imagine now ranks among the most moderated mainstream tools. This page explains what happened and what Grok is still useful for.

What changed (timeline)
- Late 2025: Grok Imagine launches free, fast, and less filtered than DALL·E or Midjourney.
- Jan 9, 2026: after viral non-consensual deepfakes of public figures, xAI restricts image generation to paying subscribers.
- Jan–Mar 2026: xAI adds a two-layer safety system: a prompt guard plus a post-generation classifier. It removes the NSFW preference toggle; extended NSFW videos start disappearing.
- Mar 19, 2026: xAI removes the free tier.
- Mar 2026: a Dutch court injunction over non-consensual imagery further hardens policy.
- 2026 onward: "predictive" moderation evaluates the likely output, not only the prompt, so even clean prompts get blocked when the result might look like real footage.
How the moderation works now
Understanding this explains why "clever prompts" don't help:
- Output-prediction scoring: the system predicts how realistic and risky the video could become before rendering and blocks accordingly.
- Highest sensitivity on realistic human faces, public figures, and anything that reads as "real footage."
- Two layers, every generation: keyword/context prompt guard + post-generation image classifier.
- No bypass toggle, no tier exemption. All users operate under the same guardrails; attempts to bypass risk account restrictions.
Enforcement has also been inconsistent. Users report fully SFW prompts (bikinis, anime, even clothed edits) getting "Content moderated." xAI acknowledged some image-edit blocks as bugs. Treat Grok as unreliable for any borderline content.
What Grok is still good for
For cinematic quality go to Kling 3; for control and mature content go to Seedance 2.0 or Wan 2.7.
Prompting (when it works)
Grok responds to the same director formula as everything else. Keep subjects unambiguous and avoid anything that could read as a real person to dodge false blocks.
